The power had gone, it's normal, we expect it; at 4pm the internet disconnects, the lights go off and all around it goes quiet. No more pumps or machines, a strange hush descends.

Somebody tried to kill the Prime Minister's Personal Assistant just before 7pm last night. Shakti Bahadur Basnet a politburo member of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and Personal Assistant to the Nepal Prime Minister Puspa Kamal Dahal, was shot at as he returned home.

Friday 16th January 2009 saw most of Kathmandu brought to a halt as the Safa Tempo Drivers union staged a ‘Chakkajam’ at one or two important road junctions in the centre of Kathmandu.
