History
Stamford has been called "the finest stone town in England". It has escaped the ravages of the Industrial Revolution and of the 20th century, and was declared England's first Conservation Area in 1967.
The town dates from Saxon times, and the street pattern is over 1,000 years old. Five Medieval churches and a 15th century almshouse jostle for attention with the Georgian buildings and squares. The museum houses the Stamford Tapestry which was finished in 2000 and took 17 years to complete. It depicts the town's history in wool, and includes many of the churches, buildings, industries and people. It was worked in 6 panels by over 25 embroiderers and measures 20ft long with a 30" drop. The Upper Gallery contains displays on the history and development of the town from its Saxon origins through to its more recent industrial past. Look out for the Stamford Mint coins, Stamford Ware pottery, displays on the Castle, replicas of Daniel Lambert and Tom Thumb and objects from World War I and II. There is a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, which are displayed in the Lower Gallery. Holiday activities for children are also part of the service.
